Fibroids Q&A

What are fibroids?

Fibroids are noncancerous tumors that grow in the uterus. They may grow inside or outside the uterine wall or within the wall.

Fibroids are very common, affecting anywhere from 20 to 80% of women of childbearing age. Researchers aren’t sure how many women get fibroids because many women may not realize they have them until their annual well-woman exam.

Fibroids vary in size and number and may come and go before your annual health visit.

Researchers are still investigating what causes fibroids but theorize the tumors may develop from a combination of genetics and hormones.

What are the symptoms of fibroids?

Fibroid symptoms vary depending on the size and number. However, you can have fibroids without any symptoms at all.

Some of the signs and symptoms you might experience with fibroids include:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal menstrual bleeding (heavy periods)
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Lower back pain
  • Increase in waist size
  • Infertility

Many of these symptoms are common with other gynecological conditions like endometriosis, when endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterus, causing pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

The experts at Health Solutions are skilled at finding the cause of pelvic pain and can help determine what’s going on.

What happens during an evaluation for fibroids?

The Health Solutions team reviews your symptoms and conducts a thorough history and physical exam when you have concerns about pelvic pain or fibroids. They request ultrasound testing to confirm your diagnosis and may also order an MRI to determine the size, location, and number of fibroids you have.

What are some treatment options for fibroids?

Treatment for your fibroids depends on the severity of your symptoms. If your fibroids don’t cause any problems, you may not need any special treatment. The team may, however, recommend you come in periodically for monitoring.

For symptomatic fibroids, Health Solutions may recommend:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Hormonal birth control
  • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) to shrink the fibroid

If medical interventions fail to improve your symptoms or you have large fibroids, the team may recommend MyoSure®, a minimally invasive surgery that removes your fibroids.
